Feeding Guidelines

You can easily look at our feeding guidelines anytime on the site. But we wanted to talk o you about what they mean.

In brief: very little.

We believe if you get a new dog and you have no idea what to feed him or her, you should use these guidelines for the first week or so. But you will learn how much your dog actually needs. It’s as easy as taking a good look at them. Is your dog chubby? Feed less. If your dog could use an extra pound or two (or ten if it is a larger dog), feed more.

Guidelines are just that. They are not hard and fast rules, cause dogs, even in the same breed and about the same size can have very different caloric and nutritional needs. If two dogs from the same breed, even the same litter that are genetically very similar have different lifestyles (mainly based on your lifestyle) they have different requiremens from the food they eat.

If you are couch potato, walk your dog once a day or less, not active on your days off, your dog should not need as much as your friends dog who runs five miles every day, hikes every weekend, and plays catch for an hour every day after work.

It doesn’t necessarily make you a bad person if you don’t exercise your dog as much as the next person. You should decide on a dog you choose to live with according to your lifestyle. But then you should gear their diet to the lifestyle you both live.
